Newtown, an older inner-city suburb immediately west of the CBD, has become increasingly
popular with home owners. The suburb is characterised by older style houses, many on large
blocks, and has the benefit of being only minutes from the city while retaining its peaceful
suburban feel.
Many substantial buildings were erected in Newtown in the late 1800′s and early 1900′s including
Weetwood, Tor, Ascot House, Kerrielaw and Gladstone House, as well as the Queensland
heritage register-listed Spreydon in Warra Street, and Elphin House in Anzac Avenue.
There are a number of private schools located in Newtown, and a state primary school. Clifford
Park, Toowoomba’s metropolitan racecourse was set aside as a racing reserve in 1860 and has
thrived ever since.
Newtown’s main public space, Newtown Park, opened in 1913 and is the site of the State Rose
Garden. There are 14 parks in total in the suburb. There are several shopping centres and the
suburb is serviced by several bus routes.
Newtown is a character precinct of Toowoomba with true character streets and some of the most
historic homes in Toowoomba.
